Wellington has several concentrations of fine contemporary dealer galleries, with ever changing exhibitions of emerging, mid-career and established artists. Each fortnight we walk a different cluster of galleries. We are introduced to the gallery, gallerist, the exhibition and sometimes we are lucky to get to talk with an artist. We get all the extras of being with a guide the gallerists know and respect. Returning several weeks later we find new exhibitions and therefore new experiences. Our guide is Mark Amery or Mary-Jane Duffy. Being an ArtExplore guide is juxtaposed perfectly with the work Mark has done for the Dominion Post reviewing latest exhibitions in Wellington’s dealer galleries and currently reviews for The Big Idea - Te Aria Nui.

Mary-Jane ran her own gallery in Wellington for many years. She has written and published extensively on the arts. Mary-Jane has recently returned to Wellington and among other things is taking a creative writing course. Both Mark and Mary Jane bring a special interest in public, community and street art to these gallery walks. As the exhibitions are constantly changing, no walk is the same. Repeat the Walks and you will always have a most interesting and informed experience, deepening and extending your knowledge of the art in the exhibitions. We always find a good place for coffee and more talking  We always find a good place for coffee and more talking.

Another terrific Art Explore Saturday with Mark. We saw a great many public sculptures around the Lower Lambton Quay areas in the sunshine before finishing up with two half-hour blocks at the Portrait Gallery and at the Academy of Fine Arts near the waterfront.

I have been attending and helping out with Art Explore walks for some time now and have loved every minute! Their latest themed walk set the group on a tour of the traditional, contemporary and often quirky at four of Wellington’s best sites for exhibiting jewellery. A bonus was getting to visit The Makers work space on Abel Smith Street for a tour of the studio and a play-by play of the displayed pieces by co-founder Annie Collins. Stay for the coffee and fantastic conversation after the walk is over. I have been attending and helping out with Art Explore walks for some time now and have loved every minute! Thank you for the tour Mark.
Some great little art spots, most of them I didn’t even know existed and the ones I did know of, hadn’t been to yet. Added bonus of sharing your knowledge of the history of the buildings and public arts and spaces along the way. A great way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning and learnt a bit more about this wonderful little city.
Not to mention met a wonderful group of people, all art enthusiasts themselves. Looking forward to the next tour.
