We are excited to present the 20120 TJ McNamara Winter Lecture Series.
We are privileged to hear from TJ McNamara sharing his lifelong passion for the visual arts.
This year TJ shares his in depth understanding of Art in America. He is doing this in the context of three centuries: Colonial, 19th Century and 20th Century.
Week 1, August 11: New England
The beginnings before the War of Independence
The influences on style and subject are all from England at first but a change is underway.
Week 2, August 18: The Nineteenth Century
The pull of influence has changed to France with Academic grandeur giving way to the colour of the Impressionists and the emergence of a gritty sense of realism applied to contemporary subject matter.
Week 3, August 25: The Twentieth Century
Painting reflects the the life and industry of the United States, its industry and its cities. One last exhibition from France sets art in America on new directions that develop into total independence of expression.
