Join Mark Amery for a never dull moment four hour road trip. In the Matariki Winter Wonder Van Tour to meet popular demand we head out to some precious gems in the Wellington region outside the Wellington CBD.
We start in Porirua -either meet us off the train from Wellington (leaves Wgtn 9.14am arrives 9.35am) or meet us at Pataka 10am (17 Parumoana Street).
There’s not only a Matariki theme to our day but also a look at fresh water systems
At Pataka we find a suite of excellent shows including Grant Sheehan, and an exhibition of five women studio potters and the group Wai Water project.
Heading over the hill to the Hutt Valley we meet photographic artist Johanna Mechen at Epuni at the inspiring Remarkery cafe, the HQ of the Common Unity project a community development hub with many innovative projects.
Onto the Te Wharewaka o Pōneke at Waiwhetu, where Meechen has previously based a project with Teri Puketapu about freshwater and the mana whenua connection to Waiwhetu stream here.
Onto the Dowse Art Museum for a remarkable suite of exhibitions including solos from Nikau Hindin, Walters Prize nominee Fiona Amundson, and Bekah Caran.
We finish the day back in Wellington at the Victoria University Kelburn campus at the outstanding Adam Art Gallery, for a suite of exhibitions including Dane Mitchell and Fluxus artist Ken Friedman, taking in a few key public artworks along the way.
Then at 3pm the van heads back to Porirua for those wanting the lift.
